In Longmen of Fuyang, there was the retired scholar Sun Rugui. His son was named Yingchen, and his nephew was named Yingxiang; both studied Confucian learning. Just as they were planning to pluck the cassia branch [pass the civil examinations] to bring honor to their parents, they were also able to observe their father's aspiration and concurrently cultivate pure karma; they truly grasped the principle that the Paths may run parallel without conflict. Moreover, ashamed to seek only personal goodness, they took more than thirty peers as companions to practice it together. Their words of exhortation said: 'The three realms are without peace, just like a burning house; transcendence to the nine lotus ranks has its own Dharma-gate.' They also said: 'Do not wait until old age to study the Way; one should know that in the midst of busyness it is best to steal leisure.' When I saw this, I was greatly pleased, and so composed an ancient-style poem to praise its beauty. Written by Wu Keji of Dongyang on the Double Fifth of the first year of the Kaixi era.
