The doctrine of the Pure Land is a shortcut to transcending saṃsāra. Layman Longshu composed this complete book and widely distributed it, intending to encourage people to regard it as necessary and to attain it without fail; his intention was truly not shallow. Whenever wishing to read it, one must carefully savor its words and thoroughly reflect upon its meaning; if one merely skims through it casually, it will indeed be in vain. If one is distracted by other matters or feels slightly lax in mind, set it aside for a short time and examine it again later, so that virtually nothing of its meaning is lost. Otherwise, not only will the meanings fail to connect, but faith will also have no origin from which to arise. If this text is of no use to you, I hope you will pass it on to other faithful persons and not merely bundle it up on a high shelf, so that Layman Longshu's intention will not be wasted. Thus my humble labor of carving the woodblocks will also not have been in vain. Written by Lü Yuanyi.
