First, the meaning of the oceans of lands mutually containing one another: The reward and transformation lands of all buddhas mutually enter and embrace one another, completely the other and completely this one, without any obstruction. If one imagines that they do not enter one another, this is an emotional view, and emotional views are not real. It is like a single room containing a single empty space: within it, humans, beasts, ghosts, insects, tables, bottles, shelves, and the like are all established relying on empty space. When empty space belongs to a human, then the empty space upon which ghosts, beasts, insects, tables, bottles, and shelves rely is entirely subsumed within the human. When empty space belongs to a ghost, then the empty space upon which humans, beasts, insects, tables, bottles, and shelves rely is entirely subsumed within the ghost. When empty space belongs to an insect, the empty space upon which humans, ghosts, beasts, tables, bottles, and shelves rely is entirely subsumed within the insect. Up to when empty space belongs to a shelf, the empty space upon which humans, beasts, ghosts, insects, tables, and bottles rely is entirely subsumed within the shelf. They interpenetrate without being confused; they are separate yet not divided; they neither enter nor do not enter. Therefore the sūtra says: 'The purity of the light of the land is universally peerless, thoroughly illuminating immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable worlds, just as figures appear in a clear mirror.' One should know that the pure realm and the defiled land mutually enter with intersecting light, like a thousand lamps in a single room.
