Second, the gateway that mind is marks itself: because all dharmas are ultimately empty, therefore there are all dharmas; if dharmas had a determined intrinsic nature, nothing would be established. The Prajñā-sūtra says: "If dharmas were not empty, there would be neither path nor fruit." The Dharmapada says: "The bodhisattva blazes with activity to establish [things] within ultimate emptiness." The Avataṃsaka-sūtra says: "A bodhisattva mahāsattva completely understands that his own body and sentient beings are fundamentally quiescent, yet diligently cultivates merit and wisdom without satiety; he is forever free from desire regarding all realms of objects, yet constantly delights in gazing upon and serving the bodily forms of the Buddhas; he knows that Buddha lands are all like empty space, yet constantly adorns the Buddha realms." For this reason, bodhisattvas delight in cultivating the Pure Land.
