到鳳林，林問：「有事相借問，得麼？」師云：「何得剜肉作瘡？」林云：「海月澄無影，遊魚獨自迷。」師云：「海月既無影，遊魚何得迷？」鳳林云：「觀風知浪起，翫水野帆飄。」師云：「孤輪獨照江山靜，自笑一聲天地驚。」林云：「任將三寸輝天地，一句臨機試道看。」師云：「路逢劍客須呈劍，不是詩人莫獻詩。」鳳林便休。師乃有頌：「大道絕同，任向西東，石火莫及，電光罔通。」溈山問仰山：「石火莫及、電光罔通，從上諸聖將什麼為人？」仰山云：「和尚意作麼生？」溈山云：「但有言說，都無寔義。」仰山云：「不然。」溈山云：「子又作麼生？」仰山云：「官不容針，私通車馬。」

He arrived at Fenglin. Lin asked, "I have a matter to ask you about; may I?" The Master said, "Why gouge out healthy flesh to make a wound?" Lin said, "The ocean moon is limpid without shadows, / yet the swimming fish wanders alone in delusion." The Master said, "Since the ocean moon is without shadows, / how can the swimming fish wander in delusion?" Fenglin said, "Observing the wind, one knows the waves will rise; / watching the water, the wild sail flutters." The Master said, "A lone wheel shines solitary, the rivers and mountains are quiet; / a single laugh of my own startles heaven and earth." Lin said, "Let your three-inch [tongue] illumine heaven and earth; / try a phrase according with the occasion and speak!" The Master said, "Meeting a swordsman on the road, one must present a sword; / unless to a poet, do not offer a poem." Fenglin then desisted. The Master thereupon composed a verse:
"The Great Way cuts off identity;
Go east or west at will.
Sparks from flint cannot reach it;
A flash of lightning cannot penetrate."
Guishan asked Yangshan, "If sparks from flint cannot reach it and a flash of lightning cannot penetrate, with what have the sages from of old guided people?" Yangshan said, "What is the Venerable's meaning?" Guishan said, "Whatever words there are, none have real meaning." Yangshan said, "Not so." Guishan said, "What do you say, then?" Yangshan said, "Officially, not a needle is admitted; privately, carts and horses pass through."
