"Followers of the Way, if you wish to attain true and correct insight, simply do not take on the delusions of others. Inside or outside, whenever you meet them, kill them: if you meet a Buddha, kill the Buddha; if you meet an ancestor, kill the ancestor; if you meet an arhat, kill the arhat; if you meet your parents, kill your parents; if you meet your kinfolk, kill your kinfolk—only then will you attain liberation. Not constrained by things, you will penetrate through and be unbound and at ease. Among the followers of the Way studying in various quarters, there has not yet been one who does not come out relying on things. This mountain monk strikes them from the very start: if they come out from the hands, I strike them on the hands; if they come out from the mouth, I strike them on the mouth; if they come out from the eyes, I strike them on the eyes. Not yet has there been a single one who comes out solitary and emancipated; all of them fall into the idle devices and spheres of the ancients. This mountain monk has not a single Dharma to give to people; I merely cure illnesses and untie bonds. You followers of the Way from various quarters, try coming out without relying on things—I want to deliberate with you! For ten or five years there has not been a single person; they are all goblins adhering to grass and attaching to leaves, spirits of bamboo and wood, wild-fox spirits and demons, blind fellows wildly gnawing on every lump of dung, wasting the offerings of the faithful of the ten directions in vain! Saying, 'I am one who has left home,' they form such views! I say to you: there is no Buddha, no Dharma, no practice, no realization. Just running from neighbor to neighbor like this, what are you trying to seek? Blind fellows putting a head on top of a head—what are you lacking?
