“Virtuous monks! When one arrives here, the point where the student exerts effort admits not a breath of wind; like a spark struck from flint or a flash of lightning, it is already gone. If a student's eyes waver, there is instantly no connection; intend with your mind and you are instantly mistaken; stir a thought and you instantly go astray. For one who understands, it never departs from before one's eyes. Virtuous monks! You shoulder your bowl-bag and your shit-carrier, running from house to house seeking Buddha, seeking Dharma. The one who is rushing about seeking right now—do you recognise him? He is brisk and lively, only lacking roots or trunk; gather him and he does not collect, sweep him and he does not scatter. If you seek him, he recedes further away; if you do not seek him, he is right before your eyes. His numinous voice reaches the ears. If a person does not have faith, they toil in vain for a hundred years.
