1.59

會下有老宿去雲巖回，師問：「汝去雲巖作麼生？」宿云：「不會。」師代曰：「堆堆地。」又老宿拈袈裟角問云：「父母未生時，還有這箇麼？」師曰：「只今豈是有耶？」宿搖手。

A senior elder in the assembly had gone to Yunyan and returned. The Master asked: "What was it like when you went to Yunyan?" The senior elder said: "I didn't understand." The Master spoke in his place: "Piled up and massive." Another senior elder held up the corner of his kāṣāya robe and asked: "Before father and mother gave birth, was there still this?" The Master said: "Could it be that right now it exists?" The senior elder shook his hand.
