冬節與泰首座喫果子次，乃問：「有一物，上拄天、下拄地，黑似漆，常在動用中，動用中收不得。且道過在甚麼處？」秦云：「過在動用中（同安顯別云：不知）。」師喚待者掇退果卓。

During the winter solstice, while eating fruit with Head Monk Tai, he asked: "There is one thing that supports heaven above and supports earth below, black like lacquer, constantly in active function, yet cannot be contained in active function. Tell me, where is its fault?" Tai said: "The fault is in active function." (Tong'an Xian gave an alternative: "I do not know.") The Master called an attendant to remove the fruit table.
