1.78

師問僧：「甚處來？」云：「三祖塔頭來。」師曰：「既從祖師處來，又要見老僧作甚麼？」云：「祖師即別，學人與和尚不別。」師曰：「老僧欲見闍黎本來師，還得否？」云：「亦須待和尚自出頭來始得。」師曰：「老僧適來暫時不在。」

The Master asked a monk, "Where have you come from?" He said, "From the Third Patriarch's stupa." The Master said, "Since you have come from the Patriarch's place, why do you want to see this old monk again?" He said, "The Patriarch is different, but this student and the upādhyāya are not different." The Master said, "This old monk wishes to see the ācārya's original teacher; is that possible?" He said, "You must also wait until the upādhyāya shows his own head before it is possible." The Master said, "Just now this old monk was temporarily absent."
