1.90

舉：「五洩默禪師到石頭處云：『一言相契即住，不契即去。』頭據坐，洩便行。頭隨後召曰：『闍黎，闍黎！』洩回首。頭曰：『從生至死秖是這箇，回首轉腦作麼？』洩忽然契悟，乃拗折拄杖而棲止焉。」師曰：「當時不是五洩先師，大難承當。然雖如是，猶涉途在。」

[The Master] cited: "When Chan Master Lingmo of Wuxie arrived at Shitou's place, he said, 'If a single word tallies, I will stay; if it does not tally, I will leave.' Shitou remained seated on his seat. Wuxie thereupon walked away. Shitou called after him, 'Ācārya, ācārya!' Wuxie turned his head. Shitou said, 'From birth to death, it is just this; why turn your head and twist your brain?' Wuxie suddenly had an awakening, whereupon he broke his staff and settled down there." The Master said, "Had it not been for the late Master Wuxie at that time, it would have been very difficult to bear. Yet even so, he was still on the road."
