藥山與雲巖遊山，腰間刀響。雲巖問：「甚麼物作聲？」藥山抽刀驀口作斫勢。師舉示眾云：「看他藥山，橫身為這箇事。今時人，欲明向上事，須體此意始得。」

Yaoshan was roaming the mountains with Yunyan, and the knife at his waist clattered. Yunyan asked, "What thing is making a sound?" Yaoshan drew the knife and made a slashing gesture across his mouth. The Master raised this and showed it to the assembly, saying, "Look at Yaoshan, putting his whole body on the line for this matter. If people today wish to understand the matter of the transcendence, they must embody this intention before they can succeed."
