藥山夜參不點燈，藥山垂語云：「我有一句子，待特牛生兒，即向爾道。」有僧云：「特牛生兒也，祇是和尚不道。」藥山云：「侍者把燈來。」其僧抽身入眾。雲巖舉問師：「作麼生？」師云：「這僧却會，祇是不肯禮拜。」

During evening instruction, Yaoshan did not light a lamp. Yaoshan gave forth a word: "I have a phrase; I shall speak it to you once the bull gives birth to a calf." A monk said, "The bull has given birth to a calf; it is just that the upādhyāya does not speak." Yaoshan said, "Attendant, bring a lamp." The monk withdrew and merged into the assembly. Yunyan raised this and asked the Master, "What about this?" The Master said, "This monk did understand, but he was just unwilling to make a prostration."
