The Master arrived in Jingzhao and paid homage to Upādhyāya Xingping. Xingping said, "Do not bow to an old rotting wreck." The Master said, "The bowing is not to an old rotting wreck." Xingping said, "That which is not an old rotting wreck does not accept bows." The Master said, "Neither does it desist." The Master then asked, "What is the mind of the ancient Buddhas?" Xingping said, "It is just your mind." The Master said, "Even though it is so, it is still a place of doubt for me." Xingping said, "If that is so, then go ask a wooden man." The Master said, "I have a sentence that does not borrow from the mouths of the sages." Xingping said, "Try to say it and let us see." The Master said, "It is not me." When the Master took his leave, Xingping asked, "Where are you going?" The Master said, "Drifting along the stream with no fixed stopping place." Xingping said, "Is the Dharma-body drifting along the stream, or is the reward-body drifting along the stream?" The Master said, "I make neither interpretation." Xingping then clapped his hands. (Baofu Zhan said, "Dongshan is naturally in a class of his own." He then gave an alternative response: "How many people have been found?")
