師與密師伯參百巖，百巖問：「甚處來？」師云：「湖南。」百巖云：「觀察使姓甚麼？」師云：「不得姓。」百巖云：「名甚麼？」師云：「不得名。」百巖云：「還治事也無？」師云：「自有郎幕在。」百巖云：「還出入也無？」師云：「不出入。」百巖云：「豈不出入？」師拂袖便出。百巖次早入堂，召二上座云：「昨日老僧對闍黎，一轉語不相契，一夜不安。今請闍黎別下一轉語，若愜老僧意，便開粥相伴過夏。」師云：「請和尚問。」百巖云：「豈不出入？」師云：「太尊貴生。」百巖乃開粥同共過夏。（天童傑云：「明投暗合，八面玲瓏，不犯當頭，轉身有路，曹洞門下，足可觀光。若是臨濟兒孫，棒折也，未放在。當時若見他道不委姓，劈脊便與一拳。這裏拶得身轉，非但開粥相延，亦可明窓下安排。有麼？有麼？」喝云：「漆桶！參堂去。」）

The Master accompanied Senior Uncle Mi to visit Baiyan. Baiyan asked, "Where do you come from?" The Master said, "Hunan." Baiyan said, "What is the surname of the Surveillance Commissioner?" The Master said, "His surname cannot be obtained." Baiyan said, "What is his given name?" The Master said, "His name cannot be obtained." Baiyan said, "Does he still administer affairs?" The Master said, "He naturally has staff and ministers present." Baiyan said, "Does he still go out and come in?" The Master said, "He does not go out or come in." Baiyan said, "How could he not go out and come in?" The Master flicked his sleeves and left. The next morning Baiyan entered the hall, summoned the two sthaviras, and said, "Yesterday, this old monk exchanged a turning word with the ācārya that did not harmonize, and I was uneasy all night. Now I invite the ācārya to offer another turning word. If it satisfies this old monk's intention, I will start serving gruel and keep you company for the summer retreat." The Master said, "Please ask, Upādhyāya." Baiyan said, "How could he not go out and come in?" The Master said, "Too exalted!" Baiyan thereupon started serving gruel and spent the summer retreat together with them. (Tiantong Jie said, "Blending in the light and harmonizing in the dark, eight-sided and exquisite, not clashing head-on, having a path to turn oneself around—under the Caodong gate, this is well worth viewing. If it were a descendant of Linji, even if his staff broke, he would not let it go. At that time, upon seeing him say his surname was unknown, he would strike him across the back with a fist. Here, pressed to turn about, not only does he lay out gruel to welcome him, he can also be arranged beneath a bright window. Is there anyone? Is there anyone?" He shouted and said, "Lacquered buckets! Go to the hall!")
