1.40

師因與雲居渡水次，師問：「水深多少？」雲居云：「不濕。」師云：「麁人？」雲居云：「請師道。」師云：「不乾。」（五祖演云：「二人恁麼說話，還有優劣也無？山僧今日因行掉臂，為爾諸人說破。過水一句不濕，庫藏真珠堆積。過水一句不乾，無錐說甚貧寒。乾濕二途俱不涉，任他綠水與青山。」）

Once, as the Master was crossing water with Yunju, the Master asked, "How deep is the water?" Yunju said, "Not wet." The Master said, "Coarse fellow!" Yunju said, "Please, Master, speak." The Master said, "Not dry." (Wuzu Yan said, "The two men spoke like this—was there superior and inferior or not? Today, as I swing my sleeves in walking, I will lay it bare for all of you: 'Crossing the water, one phrase is not wet: pearls pile high in the storehouses. Crossing the water, one phrase is not dry: with not even an awl, why speak of poverty? When neither path of dry or wet is involved, let the green waters and blue mountains be as they will.'")
