僧問：「寒暑到來，如何回避？」師云：「何不向無寒暑處去。」云：「如何是無寒暑處？」師云：「寒時寒殺闍黎，熱時熱殺闍黎。」（投子同云：「幾乎與麼去？」瑯琊覺云：「我即不然。如何是無寒暑處？僧堂裏去。」雲居舜云：「大小瑯琊，作這箇去就。山僧即不然。如何是無寒暑處？三冬向暖火，九夏取涼風寶。」峰文云：「大眾，若也會得，不妨神通遊戲，一切臨時，寒暑不相干。若也不會，且向寒暑裏經冬過夏。」上封才云：「洞山一句，可謂主賓交參，正偏涉入。諸人如今向甚處迴避？無事上山行一轉，借問諸人會也無。」泐潭準云：「若為人時氷也暖，不為人時火也寒。」）

A monk asked, "When cold and heat arrive, how does one avoid them?"
The Master said, "Why not go to the place where there is neither cold nor heat?"
He said, "What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat?"
The Master said, "When it is cold, it freezes the Ācārya to death; when it is hot, it scorches the Ācārya to death." (Touzi Tong said, "Almost gone like that!" Langye Jiao said, "With me it is not so. What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat? Go into the monks' hall." Yunju Shun said, "Great and small Langye, acting with such an approach! This mountain monk is not so. What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat? In the three months of winter, face the warm fire; in the nine weeks of summer, catch the cool breeze." Baofeng Wen said, "Great assembly, if you can understand it, there is no harm in the roaming play of spiritual penetrations: everything conforms to the occasion, and cold and heat have nothing to do with it. If you do not understand, then just spend your winters and pass your summers amidst cold and heat." Shangfeng Cai said, "Dongshan's single phrase can be called host and guest intermingling, upright and crooked interpenetrating. Where do all of you avoid it nowadays? When there is nothing to do, walk around the mountain once. Let me ask all of you: do you understand or not?" Letan Zhun said, "When [acting] for people's sake, even ice is warm; when not [acting] for people's sake, even fire is cold.")
