1.87

師謂眾云：「知有佛向上人，方有語話分。」僧問：「如何是佛向上人？」師云：「非佛。」（保福別云：「佛非。」法眼別云：「方便呼為佛。」）

The Master said to the assembly, "Only when one knows there is a person going beyond the Buddha does one have a bit of a share in speech." A monk asked, "What is the person going beyond the Buddha?" The Master said, "Not Buddha." (Baofu gave an alternative: "Buddha is not." Fayan gave an alternative: "Expediently called Buddha.")
