A monk asked, "What is the fall according with kind?" He said, "Not severing sound and form, nor losing scent and taste." "Who is 'that teacher'?" He said, "The six sense bases." "What is 'where that teacher falls'?" He said, "An old rustic enters the village: eyes, ears, nose, and tongue are all lost." "What is 'you also follow and fall'?" He said, "Preserved." "Preserved as what?" He said, "It cannot be stirred, nor is it apart from sound and form." Guishan also said, "A hundred years after me, I will become a water buffalo, with a line of characters written on my left flank: 'Monk So-and-so of Mount Gui.' You tell me, when you see it, what will you call it?" There was no response. Later Caoshan answered on their behalf, saying, "Call it a water buffalo." [A monk] asked, "I wonder, does this water buffalo know how to plow and sow?" [Caoshan] said, "Indeed so." "What kind is it?" He said, "One that wears fur and sports horns." "In the four seasons, what water and grass does it eat?" He said, "That which does not enter the mouth." "What is the water buffalo?" He said, "It does not realize sainthood." "What is holding a stalk of grass in its mouth?" He said, "Feathers and fur seem to resemble it." "Does it transcend the sagely, or transcend kind?" He said, "It transcends the sagely." [A monk] asked, "What is the water buffalo?" He said, "Dark and indistinct." "What is coming with a stalk of grass in its mouth?" He said, "An ancient has already spoken of it: 'Feathers and fur seem to resemble it.' (Heyu spoke it himself in answering the ancient's words; what can be done?)" He also said, "The 'one stalk of grass' is just understanding the unchanging." He also said, "The patriarchs and buddhas do not know the existence of It, but the black cat and white ox do know the existence of It. Why do the black cat and white ox know the existence of It?" He said, "They merely have no understanding of anything whatsoever." "Why do the patriarchs and buddhas not know the existence of It?" He said, "The patriarchs cling to the seal; the buddhas are mere semblances." "Just what do the black cat and white ox know the existence of?" He said, "They only know the existence of the black cat and white ox." "What is the matter that the black cat and white ox know the existence of?" He said, "It does not come from west or east; it is not obtained from the thirty-two marks." "What is a patriarch?" He said, "There is something above." "What is a buddha?" He said, "A mere semblance."
