The Daoist in Paper Clothes came to visit. The Master asked, 'Are you not the Daoist in Paper Clothes?' [The Daoist] said, 'I would not dare [claim it].' The Master said, 'What is the matter under the paper clothes?' The Daoist said, 'Once this single robe hangs upon the body, the ten thousand dharmas are all as such.' The Master said, 'What is the function under the paper clothes?' The Daoist came forward, answered 'Yes', and thereupon passed away standing up. The Master said, 'You only understand how to go like that; why do you not understand how to come like that?' The Daoist suddenly opened his eyes and asked, 'What about when the one numinous true nature does not rely on a womb?' The Master said, 'That is not yet wondrous.' The Daoist said, 'What is wondrous?' The Master said, 'Not borrowing what is borrowed.' The Daoist said, 'Take care,' and immediately passed away. The Master gave an instructional verse, saying: 'The nature of awakening is perfectly bright, a formless body; / Do not use intellectual views to falsely make distant or near. / With a discordant thought, one is immediately blind to the mysterious substance; / With an erring mind, one is not a neighbour to the Way. / Sentiments divide the ten thousand dharmas, sinking into external objects; / Diverse cognitions and judgments ruin one's original reality. / If within such words one thoroughly understands, / Clearly there is nothing to do, the person of former times.'
