師問德上座：「菩薩在定聞香象渡河，出甚麼經？」僧云：「出《涅槃經》。」師曰：「定前聞？定後聞？」僧云：「和尚流也。」師曰：「道也太殺道，始道得一半。」僧云：「和尚如何？」師曰：「灘下接取。」師又問：「佛真法身猶若虛空，應物現形如水中月，作麼生說應底道理。」德曰：「如驢覰井。」師曰：「道則太殺道，只道得八成。」德曰：「和尚又如何？」師曰：「如井覰驢。」

The Master asked Senior Monk De, 'In which sūtra is it taught that a bodhisattva in samādhi hears a fragrant elephant crossing the river?' The monk said, 'It is in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra.' The Master said, 'Does he hear it before samādhi, or hear it after samādhi?' The monk said, 'The master is drifting.' The Master said, 'You have spoken quite a lot, but you have only managed to say half of it.' The monk said, 'What about the master?' The Master said, 'Catch it downstream at the rapids.' The Master asked again, '"The Buddha's true dharmakāya is like empty space; responding to things, it manifests forms like the moon in water." How do you explain the principle of responding?' De said, 'Like a donkey peering into a well.' The Master said, 'You have spoken quite a lot, but you have only said eighty percent.' De said, 'What about the master?' The Master said, 'Like a well peering at a donkey.'
