問：「具何知解善能對眾問難？」師曰：「不呈句。」僧云：「問難箇甚麼？」師曰：「刀斧斫不入。」僧云：「能恁麼問難，還更有不肯者也無？」師曰：「有。」僧云：「是什麼人？」師曰：「曹山。」

A monk asked, "Endowed with what understanding is one skilled in confronting the assembly with challenging questions?" The Master said, "Not presenting phrases." The monk said, "What do you challenge?" The Master said, "Knives and axes cannot cut into it." The monk said, "When one can ask challenging questions like this, is there still someone who refuses to assent?" The Master said, "There is." The monk said, "Who is it?" The Master said, "Caoshan."
