1.52

問：「具何知解，善能對眾問難？」師曰：「不呈句。」僧云：「問難箇甚麼？」師曰：「刀斧斫不入。」僧云：「恁麼問難，還有不肯者也無？」師曰：「有。」僧云：「是什麼人？」師曰：「曹山。」

A monk asked, "Possessing what understanding is one able to cross-examine people in front of the assembly?" The Master said, "Not presenting phrases." The monk said, "What is cross-examined?" The Master said, "Axes and cleavers cannot enter." The monk said, "When one cross-examines like this, is there still someone who does not approve?" The Master said, "There is." The monk said, "Who is this person?" The Master said, "Caoshan."
