1.72

南泉曰：「未具胞胎時，還有語也無？」有人舉問雲峯，峯曰：「道有道無則喫三十棒。」又問招慶，慶曰：「從他自道。」又舉問師，師曰：「有。」云：「請和尚傍瞥。」師曰：「將什麼物聞？」云：「聾者還聞也無？」師曰：「聾者若得聞則具耳目。」云：「什麼人得聞？」師曰：「未具胞胎者。」

Nanquan said, "Before the womb was formed, were there words or not?" Someone brought this up and asked Yunfeng. Feng said, "Saying there are or saying there are not—eat thirty blows of the staff." He also asked Zhaoqing. Qing said, "Let it speak for itself." He also brought it up and asked the Master. The Master said, "There were." The questioner said, "Please take a sidelong glance, Venerable Monk." The Master said, "With what object would you hear it?" The questioner said, "Does a deaf person still hear it or not?" The Master said, "If a deaf person can hear it, then he possesses ears and eyes." The questioner said, "What kind of person can hear it?" The Master said, "One whose womb has not yet been formed."
