南泉曰：「未具胞胎時，還有語也無？」有人舉問雪峯，峯曰：「道有道無，則喫三十棒。」又問招慶，慶曰：「從他自道。」又舉問師，師曰：「有。」云：「請和尚傍瞥。」師曰：「將什麼物聞？」云：「聾者還聞也無。」師曰：「聾者若得聞，則具耳目。」云：「什麼人得聞？」師曰：「未具胞胎者。」

Nanquan said: 'Before the womb is fully formed, are there words or not?' Someone brought this up to ask Xuefeng. Feng said: 'Saying there are or saying there are not, you get thirty blows of the stick.' He also asked Zhaoqing; Qing said: 'Let it say so itself.' He also brought it up to ask the Master. The Master said: 'There are.' [The monk] said: 'Please glance aside at it, Venerable.' The Master said: 'With what thing would you hear it?' [The monk] said: 'Can a deaf person still hear it or not?' The Master said: 'If a deaf person could hear, then he would possess ears and eyes.' [The monk] said: 'What kind of person can hear it?' The Master said: 'One who has not yet fully formed the womb.'
