1.78

僧問：「維摩默然，文殊讚善，未審還稱得維摩意麼？」師曰：「爾還縛得虛空麼？」僧云：「恁麼則不稱維摩意也。」師曰：「他又爭肯。」僧云：「畢竟有何所歸？」師曰：「若有所歸即同彼二公也。」僧云：「和尚又作麼生？」師曰：「待爾患維摩病始得。」

A monk asked, "Vimalakīrti was silent, and Mañjuśrī praised him as excellent; I wonder, did this still match Vimalakīrti's intention?" The Master said, "Can you bind empty space?" The monk said, "If so, then it did not match Vimalakīrti's intention." The Master said, "How could he agree?" The monk said, "Ultimately, where does it return?" The Master said, "If there were a place to return, it would be identical to those two gentlemen." The monk said, "And what about you, Venerable Monk?" The Master said, "You must wait until you contract Vimalakīrti's illness."
