僧舉：「陸亘大夫問南泉：『姓甚麼？』南泉曰：『姓王。』亘云：『王還有眷屬也無？』南泉曰：『四臣不昧。』亘云：『王居何位？』南泉曰：『玉殿苔生。』」問師：「玉殿苔生意旨如何？」師曰：「不居正位。」僧云：「八方來朝時如何？」師曰：「他不受禮。」僧云：「何用來朝？」師曰：「違則斬。」僧云：「違是臣分上，未審君意如何？」師曰：「樞密不得旨。」僧云：「恁麼則爕理之功，全歸臣相也。」師曰：「爾還知君意麼？」僧云：「外方不敢論量。」師曰：「如是如是。」

A monk brought up: "Grand Master Lu Gen asked Nanquan, 'What is your surname?' Nanquan said, 'My surname is Wang.' Gen said, 'Does the king still have dependents?' Nanquan said, 'The four ministers are not dark.' Gen said, 'In what position does the king dwell?' Nanquan said, 'Moss grows in the jade hall.'" He asked the Master, "What is the meaning of moss growing in the jade hall?" The Master said, "He does not dwell in the correct rank." The monk said, "When the eight directions come to pay homage, how is it?" The Master said, "He does not accept their salutations." The monk said, "What is the use of coming to pay homage?" The Master said, "Those who disobey are beheaded." The monk said, "Disobedience belongs to the ministers' part; what is the lord's intent?" The Master said, "The Privy Council does not obtain the imperial decree." The monk said, "If so, then the merit of harmonizing and ordering completely reverts to the ministers and councilors." The Master said, "Do you still know the lord's intent?" The monk said, "Those outside dare not reckon it." The Master said, "So it is, so it is."
