1.32

僧問：「五位對賓時如何？」師曰：「汝即今問那箇位？」僧云：「某甲從偏位中來，請師向正位中接。」師曰：「不接。」僧云：「為甚麼不接？」師曰：「恐落偏位中去。」師却問僧：「秖如不接，是對賓，是不對賓？」僧云：「早是對賓了也。」師曰：「如是如是。」

A monk asked, "When the five ranks face a guest, how is it?" The Master said, "Which rank are you asking about right now?" The monk said, "I come from within the biased rank; I ask the Master to receive me within the correct rank." The Master said, "I will not receive you." The monk said, "Why will you not receive me?" The Master said, "For fear of falling into the biased rank." The Master then asked the monk, "Just as when not receiving you, is that facing a guest, or is it not facing a guest?" The monk said, "It is already facing a guest." The Master said, "So it is, so it is."
