僧問：「五位對賓時如何？」師曰：「汝即今問那箇位。」僧云：「某甲從偏位中來，請師向正位中接。」師曰：「不接。」僧云：「為甚麼不接？」師曰：「恐落偏位中去。」師却問僧：「秖如不接，是對賓是不對賓？」僧云：「早是對賓了也。」師曰：「如是如是。」

A monk asked, "What happens when the Five Ranks face a guest?" The Master said, "Which rank are you asking about right now?" The monk said, "I have come from the biased rank; I ask the Master to receive me in the correct rank." The Master said, "I will not receive you." The monk said, "Why will you not receive me?" The Master said, "I fear falling into the biased rank." The Master then asked the monk, "As for not receiving you, is it facing the guest or not facing the guest?" The monk said, "It is already facing the guest." The Master said, "So it is, so it is."
