忠國師驀喚侍者，侍者來立，國師低頭，侍者立多時出去。國師喚侍者，如是三度了，曰：「將謂我辠負汝，汝却辠負我。」百丈舉問趙州：「國師三喚侍者，意作麼生？」州曰：「如人暗裏書字，字雖不成，文彩已彩。」又後有人舉問師：「國師三喚侍者，意作麼生？」師曰：「侍者第二遍回來，云：『某甲不信和尚喚。』」

National Teacher Zhong suddenly called his attendant. The attendant came and stood; the National Teacher lowered his head. The attendant stood for a long time and left. The National Teacher called the attendant; having done so three times, he said: 'I thought I had wronged you, but you on the contrary have wronged me.' Baizhang brought this up to ask Zhaozhou: 'The National Teacher called his attendant three times; what was the intention?' Zhou said: 'Like someone writing characters in the dark: although the characters are not formed, the literary brilliance is already evident.' Later, someone brought this up to ask the Master: 'The National Teacher called his attendant three times; what was the intention?' The Master said: 'The attendant came back the second time and said: "I do not believe the Venerable called me."'"
