2.40

問：「未審此水牯牛還解耕稼否？」曰：「灼然。」云：「是甚麼類？」曰：「被毛戴角者。」云：「四時食何水草？」曰：「不入口者。」云：「如何是水牯牛？」曰：「不證聖。」云：「如何是含一莖草？」曰：「毛羽相似去。」

A monk asked, "I wonder, does this water buffalo know how to plow and sow or not?" The Master said, "Evidently." The monk said, "What kind of species is it?" The Master said, "One that wears fur and bears horns." The monk said, "Through the four seasons, what water and grass does it eat?" The Master said, "That which does not enter the mouth." The monk said, "What is the water buffalo?" The Master said, "It does not realise holiness." The monk said, "What is holding a stalk of grass in its mouth?" The Master said, "Fur and feathers resembling each other."
