上堂，良久云：「觸目不會道，運足焉知路。」僧問：「如何是觸目菩提？」師云：「與我拈却佛殿。」問：「如設是最初一句？」師云：「九九八十一。」僧便禮拜，師云：「近前來。」僧便近前，師便打。問：「如何是實學底事？」師云：「大好消息。」進云：「畢竟是誰家之子？」師云：「臘月二十五。」問：「承教有言，一切智智清淨時如何？」師便唾之。進云：「古人方便又作麼生？」師云：「來來，截却汝脚跟，換却汝髑髏，鉢盂裏拈却匙筯，拈將鼻孔來。」進云：「甚處有許多般？」師云：「者掠虛漢。」便打。問：「如何是禪？」師云：「是。」進云：「如何是道？」師云：「得。」問：「如何是一切法皆是佛法？」師云：「三家村裏老婆盈衢溢路，會麼？」學云：「不會。」師云：「非但汝不會，大有人不會在。」問：「學人簇簇地，商量箇什麼？」師云：「大眾久立。」

Ascending the hall, after a long silence [the Master] said: "Meeting the eye, one does not understand the Way; moving the feet, how could one know the road?"
A monk asked: "What is bodhi meeting the eye?"
The Master said: "Take away the Buddha hall for me."
[A monk] asked: "What is the very first phrase?"
The Master said: "Nine times nine is eighty-one."
The monk then bowed, and the Master said: "Come forward."
The monk came forward, and the Master struck him.
[A monk] asked: "What is the matter of genuine study?"
The Master said: "Excellent news."
[The monk] advanced and asked: "Ultimately whose son is he?"
The Master said: "The twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month."
[A monk] asked: "It is stated in the teachings: 'When sarvajñajñāna is pure, how is it?'"
The Master spat at him.
[The monk] advanced and asked: "What about the skillful means of the ancients?"
The Master said: "Come, come! Chop off your heels, exchange your skull, take the spoon and chopsticks out of your bowl, and bring forth your nostrils."
[The monk] advanced and asked: "Where are there so many sorts?"
The Master said: "This phantom-grasping fellow!" and struck him.
[A monk] asked: "What is Chan?"
The Master said: "Yes."
[The monk] advanced and asked: "What is the Way?"
The Master said: "Attained."
[A monk] asked: "What does it mean that 'all dharmas are the Buddha-dharma'?"
The Master said: "Old women in a village of three families fill the thoroughfares and spill over the roads. Do you understand?"
The student said: "I do not understand."
The Master said: "Not only do you not understand; there are plenty of people who do not understand."
[A monk] asked: "The students gather together in clusters—what are they discussing?"
The Master said: "The assembly has been standing long."
