Ascending the hall, he said, "To bring up a phrase and have you directly take it upon yourselves is already splattering dung on your heads. Even if you pick up a single hair-tip and instantly illuminate the whole earth, that too is gouging flesh to make a wound. Even so, one must genuinely arrive at this state before it will do. If you have not yet, you must never grasp at empty air; instead, you must step back and search under your own heels to see what principle it is. In truth, there is not a thread or a hair to serve as your understanding or to serve as your doubt. What is more, each and every one of you has a section of this matter. When the great functioning appears before you, it does not bother you for a single hair-tip of effort, and you are no different from the patriarchs and buddhas. It is simply that your roots of faith are shallow and thin, and your evil karma is thick and dense; suddenly you sprout so many horns, carrying your bowls and bags across thousands of prefectures and ten thousand li—why suffer this grievance? And what do you people lack? Which great fellow does not have a share? Undertaking it all by oneself is already inadequate; you must not suffer people's deceit or accept people's directives. The moment you see an old monk open his mouth, you should stuff a special stone right into his mouth! You are just like green flies on dung, fighting to suck at it, gathering three or five heads together to confer. What bitter grief! Brothers, in an earlier time the ancients could not help doing this for you, and so they offered a phrase or half a sentence to open an entryway for you. Knowing that this is how things are, set it aside, exert a bit of your own sinew and bone—would that not bring a little intimacy? Be quick! Be quick! Time waits for no one. An exhalation does not guarantee the next inhalation. What other body and mind do you have to spend on idle matters elsewhere? You must pay earnest attention. Take care."
