Ascending the hall, he said: "The moment a single word is raised, a thousand differences take the same track; encompassing minute dust motes is still the talk of teaching gates. If one is a patch-robed monk, what should one do? If one deliberates here about the intention of the Patriarch or the intention of the Buddha, the single road of Caoxi sinks away flat. Is there still anyone who can speak? One who can speak, come forward!"

Then a monk asked: "What is the talk that transcends the Buddhas and surpasses the Patriarchs?"
The Master said: "Sesame cake."
He advanced and asked: "What connection does this have?"
The Master said: "Indeed, what connection does it have?"

The Master then said: "You must not act [blindly]. Seeing someone speak of the Patriarch's intention, you immediately ask about talk that transcends the Buddhas and surpasses the Patriarchs. In principle, what do you call 'Buddha'? What do you call 'Patriarch'? Speaking of talk that transcends the Buddhas and surpasses the Patriarchs, you immediately ask about leaving the three realms. Bring the three realms here! What seeing, hearing, awareness, or knowing obstructs you? What phenomena of sound and form are there for you to resolve? What bowl do you resolve? Taking that as disparate views, those ancient sages can do nothing with you. Throwing the body out for the sake of things, they say that the entire substance is completely real, and that thing by thing, face to face, nothing can be attained. When I tell you that right here there is nothing at all, that is already burying you away. If you truly have not attained an entry point, then privately investigate by yourselves in secret. Aside from putting on clothes, eating food, defecating, and urinating, what else is there? Why needlessly give rise to so many kinds of false thinking? Furthermore, there is another type who, as if it were a matter of course, gather together and cite the words of an ancient, using their conscious nature to memorize and their false thinking to calculate, saying: 'I understand the Buddhadharma!' They do nothing but engage in entanglement to while away the days, and what is more, they complain that things are not to their liking, abandoning their parents, teachers, and companions over thousands of miles to act like this. Such stump-whacking rascals—what deadly hurry is there to go on pilgrimage?" With his staff he then drove them down.

A monk asked: "If one's parents do not permit it, one cannot leave home. How does one leave home?"
The Master said: "Shallow."
He advanced and asked: "The student does not understand."
The Master said: "Deep."

He asked: "Regarding the matter from of old, please, Master, present the guideline."
The Master said: "In the morning looking southeast; in the evening looking northwest."
He advanced and asked: "What about when understanding it just like this?"
The Master said: "The eastern house lights a lamp; the western house sits in the dark."

He asked: "Please, Master, speak a phrase for the present!"
The Master said: "I let you have a thread of a path; return a phrase to me!"

He asked: "Without touching upon subtle trifles, please, Master, speak!"
The Master said: "First, I fear you will not ask; second, I fear you will not raise it; third, it comes to the old monk hopping madly; fourth, it comes to you stepping back. Speak quickly! Speak quickly!"
The monk then bowed; the Master then struck him.

He asked: "What about when the myriad functions are completely wiped out?"
The Master said: "Bring the Buddha hall to me, and I will deliberate with you."
He advanced and asked: "How does that concern other matters?"
The Master scolded him: "This phantom-snatching rascal!"

He asked: "What about when everything before one's eyes is swept clean?"
The Master said: "Why have a feverish fit?"
The monk bowed and withdrew.
The Master said: "Come here for a moment, come here for a moment!"
The monk approached, and the Master hit him with his staff, saying: "This phantom-snatching rascal scares me!"

He asked: "Who is the master of the Dharma King?"
The Master said: "Fold your hands together."

He asked: "What about when a blind turtle encounters the hole of a floating log?"
The Master said: "The old monk folds his hands and leaves."
