Ascending the hall, he said: "Today I will cite a case for all of you. Assembly, listen attentively!" After a long silence, a monk came forward, bowed, and was about to frame a question, when the Master drove him away with his staff, saying: "Destroyers of the barbarian seed like this, ācāryas who stuff down meals on the long bench—what use are they to talk with? Such stump-whacking rascals!" With his staff he drove them all down at once.

A monk asked: "When the great assembly gathers like clouds, what matter ought to be discussed?"
The Master said: "The text that follows is long; it is deferred to tomorrow."
He advanced and asked: "What about when one goes on like this?"
The Master said: "Fall."
He advanced and asked: "Where is the fall?"
The Master said: "After eating one's fill on the long bench, indulging in hollow and false words."

He asked: "How does the assembly on Vulture Peak compare with today?"
The Master said: "There is an echo within the words."
The student said: "What about the present matter?"
The Master said: "No need to ask again."

He asked: "It does not make the character yi (以), nor is it the character ba (八); I wonder, what character is it?"
The Master said: "Nine times nine is eighty-one."
He advanced and asked: "The student does not understand; I beg the Master to point it out."
The Master said: "Where have I ever let you down?"

He asked: "What did the ancient worthies of old attain that they were proclaimed exalted?"
The Master said: "Fond of asking, not fond of answering."
He advanced and asked: "If so, then one does not rely on the Upādhyāya's tongue to chew it over and go on."
The Master said: "The flatiron and the tea kettle are not the same."

He asked: "In the Upādhyāya's speech for the sake of others, is there still a phrase that has not yet been spoken?"
The Master said: "It cannot be reached by speech."
He advanced and asked: "Why is it like this?"
The Master said: "Just because it is like this."

He asked: "When a completely blind person comes, does the Master still receive them or not?"
The Master threw his body down.

He asked: "What is Mount Yunmen?"
The Master said: "The geng peak determines the cave."

He asked: "When the clashing of teeth all falls into names and words, how can one avoid falling into the traces of the ancients?"
The Master said: "Penetrating capacity distinguishes itself."

He asked: "What is the Upādhyāya's family style?"
The Master said: "Withered skin and emaciated bones."

He asked: "What is the Way?"
The Master said: "Topsy-turvy."
He advanced and asked: "Why is it like this?"
The Master said: "First, it cannot be faced; second, it cannot be unfolded."

He asked: "What about when illumination is obtained in a dark room?"
The Master said: "How far is it from here to Langzhou?"
