上堂，大眾集定，乃以拄杖指云：「乾坤大地微塵諸佛，總在裏許爭佛法、覓勝負，還有人諫得麼？若無人諫得，待老僧與汝諫看。」時有僧云：「請和尚諫。」師云：「這野狐精。」問：「盡大地人來，師如何接？」師云：「提綱有路。」進云：「莫秖這便是指示不？」師云：「合取狗口。」問：「時中不明，如何得不落緣塵去？」師云：「閉門哭蒼天。」問：「十二時中如何體悉？」師云：「不難辨。」進云：「還有學人入頭處也無？」師云：「細看前話。」問：「靈山一會迦葉親聞，未審聞箇什麼句？」師云：「不避來鋒，速道速道。」進云：「是什麼句？」師云：「掣電之機，徒勞佇思。」問：「千聖不傳、古今不歷，如何是和尚接人一句？」師云：「觸忤老兄得麼？」進云：「如何是接人一句？」師云：「作麼？」問：「有何逕要令學人心息？」師云：「放爾三十棒。」問：「目前坦然時如何？」師云：「海水在汝頭上。」進云：「還著得也無？」師云：「向這裏脫空妄語。」問：「施主設齋，將何報答？」師云：「量才補職。」進云：「不會。」師云：「不會即喫飯。」問：「如何是向上事？」師云：「截却汝肚腸，換却匙筯，拈將鉢盂來看。」僧無對。師云：「這掠虛漢。」問：「如何是佛法大意？」師云：「來鋒有路。」問：「如何是學人轉身處？」師云：「利。」問：「一口吞盡時如何？」師云：「我在汝肚裏。」進云：「和尚為什麼在學人肚裏？」師云：「還我話頭來。」

Ascending the hall, when the great assembly had gathered, he pointed with his staff and said: "The universe, the great earth, and the Buddhas as numerous as fine dust particles are all in here disputing over the Buddha-Dharma and vying for victory. Is there anyone who can dissuade them? If no one can dissuade them, wait for this old monk to try dissuading them for you." Then a monk said, "Please, upādhyāya, dissuade them." The Master said, "This wild fox spirit!" He asked, "When all the people of the great earth come, how do you receive them, Master?" The Master said, "There is a way to raise the outline." He advanced and asked, "Is this very thing the instruction?" The Master said, "Shut your dog mouth!" He asked, "When one is not clear in all moments, how can one avoid falling into conditioning and dust?" The Master said, "Close the door and cry out to blue heaven." He asked, "How should one understand throughout the twelve periods of the day?" The Master said, "It is not difficult to distinguish." He advanced and asked, "Is there still an entry point for the student?" The Master said, "Look closely at the previous words." He asked, "At the gathering on Vulture Peak, Kāśyapa heard it personally. I wonder, what phrase did he hear?" The Master said, "Do not dodge the incoming spearhead; speak quickly, speak quickly!" He advanced and asked, "What phrase is it?" The Master said, "At the flash of lightning, pondering in vain is of no use." He asked, "Not transmitted by the thousand sages, not traversed by past or present—what is the upādhyāya's single phrase for receiving people?" The Master said, "Could I offend you, elder brother?" He advanced and asked, "What is the single phrase for receiving people?" The Master said, "What?" He asked, "What direct essential is there to make the student's mind cease?" The Master said, "I let you off thirty blows." He asked, "What about when it is completely smooth right before one's eyes?" The Master said, "The ocean water is above your head." He advanced and asked, "Can it still be put there?" The Master said, "Here you speak empty, lying words." He asked, "When a patron provides a vegetarian meal, with what does one repay it?" The Master said, "Measure talent and appoint to office." He advanced and asked, "I do not understand." The Master said, "If you do not understand, then eat your meal." He asked, "What is the transcendental matter?" The Master said, "Cut out your entrails, change your spoon and chopsticks, and bring your alms bowl for me to see!" The monk had no reply. The Master said, "This fellow who snatches at emptiness!" He asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha-Dharma?" The Master said, "There is a way for the incoming spearhead." He asked, "What is the student's turning point?" The Master said, "Sharp." He asked, "What about when one swallows it all in one gulp?" The Master said, "I am inside your belly." He advanced and asked, "Why is the upādhyāya inside the student's belly?" The Master said, "Give me back my topic of talk!"
