上堂云：「有解問話者，置將一問來。」僧出禮拜云：「請師鑒。」師云：「拋釣釣鯤鯨，釣得箇蝦蟇。」僧云：「和尚莫錯。」師云：「朝走三千、暮走八百，作麼生？」無語，師便打。

Ascending the hall, he said: "If someone understands how to ask a question, let him put forward a question." A monk came forward, bowed, and said: "Please, Master, examine." The Master said: "Casting a hook to angle for a leviathan, I catch a toad." The monk said: "Upādhyāya, do not be mistaken." The Master said: "Running three thousand in the morning and eight hundred in the evening—how is that?" There was no answer. The Master struck him.
