Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the fundamental source?" The Master held up his staff and said, "If one brings it up, one has already gone toward the transcendental." The monk asked again, "What is the fundamental source?" The Master said, "Jambudvīpa in the south, Uttarakuru in the north." A monk asked, "Why does Samantabhadra ride an elephant and Mañjuśrī ride a lion?" The Master said, "I have neither elephant nor lion; I'll just ride the Buddha hall out through the triple gate." A monk asked, "What is the intention of the teachings?" The Master said, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth." He also said, "Right when distinguished clearly, it is still a roundabout expression of the teachings' intention; if judged by bringing out the main cord, it is not there yet." A monk asked, "How is it when all wisdom penetrates without obstruction?" The Master said, "Sweep the floor and splash water; the minister has arrived." A monk asked, "How is it when one recognizes the nature following the flow?" The Master said, "In the eastern hall the moon is bright; in the western hall it is dark." A monk asked, "What is the matter of the separate transmission outside the teachings of the three vehicles?" The Master said, "If you do not ask, I do not answer. If you ask me, in the morning one reaches the Western Heaven, and in the evening returns to the land of Tang." The monk said, "I beg the Master for instruction." The Master said, "One is not accomplished; two is not right." A monk asked, "What is the intention of the Patriarch in coming from the West?" The Master said, "In broad daylight under the blue sky, why talk in your sleep?" A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "In broad daylight, the qilin gazes at the Northern Dipper." A monk asked, "When a student reaches this point, why can he not speak?" The Master said, "Sitting inside a wild fox's den." A monk asked, "What tune is it that does not fall into past or present?" The Master dragged his staff and stepped down from the seat. A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Facing south, gaze at the Northern Dipper." A monk asked, "What was the ancient's intention in slaying the snake?" The Master struck him. A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "The ācārya received the precepts too early." A monk asked, "What is the host within the guest?" The Master said, "Riding upon a question." He advanced and asked, "What is the host within the host?" The Master said, "Clasp your hands together." He advanced and asked, "How far apart are guest and host?" The Master said, "Like the eye and the pupil." He advanced and asked, "What should they discuss together?" The Master said, "Three times nine is twenty-seven." A monk asked, "Since arriving at the Upādhyāya's Dharma assembly, I have not understood; I beg the Master for instruction." The Master said, "May I cut off your head?" A monk asked, "I beg the Master for instruction, so that the student may suddenly cease delusion." The Master said, "What is the price of rice in Xiangzhou?" A monk asked, "How is it when the two Honoured Ones meet?" The Master said, "It is not accidental."
