1.36

上堂云：「天帝釋與釋迦老子在中庭裏相爭佛法甚鬧。」便下座。問：「如何是曹溪的的意？」師云：「老僧愛瞋不愛喜。」進云：「為什麼如此？」師云：「路逢劍客須呈劍，不是詩人不獻詩。」問：「二尊相見共談何事？」師云：「不決即道。」問：「人天交接其意如何？」師云：「對眾呈機。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "Sakra, Devānāmindra, and Old Śākya are arguing about the Buddha Dharma in the courtyard, making quite a racket." He then stepped down from the seat. A monk asked, "What is the exact intention of Caoxi?" The Master said, "This old monk loves anger and does not love joy." He advanced and asked, "Why is it so?" The Master said, "When meeting a swordsman on the road, you must show your sword; if one is not a poet, do not present a poem." A monk asked, "When the two Honoured Ones meet, what matter do they discuss together?" The Master said, "If it is not settled, then speak." A monk asked, "What is the meaning of humans and devas mingling?" The Master said, "Presenting one's dynamic function before the assembly."
