Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "From the beginning, what matter was there anyway? Now, having no alternative, I tell you all for the moment: in the entire earth, what thing is there to be an object or a condition for you? If there is even the point of a needle to be an obstruction or a hindrance for you, bring it out to me! What do you call Buddha and patriarch? What do you call mountains, rivers, the great earth, sun, moon, and stars? What do you take to be the four great elements and the five aggregates? My speaking like this is called the talk of an old woman in a village of three families. If one suddenly meets a fellow of genuine pilgrimage who hears such talk, if he grabs my feet and drags me down below the steps, what fault would there be? Even though it is like this, based on what principle would it be so? Do not take advantage of a glib tongue to speak wildly here; one must be such a fellow before it is possible. If suddenly this old fellow tracks you down under your heels and you have nowhere to go, if I break your legs with blows, what fault would there be? Since it is like this, right now is there anyone who would ask about words within the ancestral lineage? Wait for this old fellow to give an answer, and then walk east or walk west." A monk was about to ask, when the Master struck him right across the mouth with his staff and stepped down from the seat. A monk asked, "How is it when the lion stretches?" The Master said, "Put stretching aside for now; try roaring and let us see." The monk responded, "Yes." The Master said, "This is the squeak of a mouse."
