The Master ascended the hall. After a long silence, he said: "The dynamic of proclaiming the Way is truly difficult to explain and untangle. Even if a single word hits the mark, it is still roundabout; how much less beneficial is continuous chattering? However, within the doctrinal vehicles there are distinct divisions: the vinaya is the study of morality, the sūtras are the study of meditation, and the śāstras are the study of wisdom. The three divisions of the canon and the five vehicles, the five periods and eight teachings—each has its proper place. Yet the single vehicle of the complete and sudden is also extremely difficult to understand. If you understand it directly, you are still separated from patch-robed monks as heaven is from earth. If you present your potential within phrases under the gate of patch-robed monks, you will waste your effort waiting and pondering. The knockings and clashings of the house style are manifold and varied; if you intend to take a step forward, your fault lies in seeking another's tongue to lay out a road. How should the matter handed down from above be handled? Can you speak of the complete or speak of the sudden here? Can you speak of this side or that side? You had better not misunderstand! Do not, seeing me speak like this, then go and speculate about what is not complete and not sudden. Here, you must be the right person before you can attain it. Do not take words relying on teachers, similar words, and conjecture words, and present them everywhere, taking them to be your own understanding. Do not misunderstand! Right now, what matter is there? Let us investigate and determine it before the assembly." At that time, Prefect He bowed and asked, "This disciple requests instruction." The Master said, "Before your eyes there is no unusual grass." An official asked, "Is the Buddhadharma like the moon in the water, or not?" The Master said, "Clear waves have no penetrating path." He advanced and asked, "From where did the Upādhyāya attain it?" The Master said, "Where does your asking again come from?" He advanced and asked, "What about precisely at such a time?" The Master said, "Layer upon layer of passes and mountain roads." An official asked, "When a thousand sons surround you, which one is the target?" The Master said, "The abbot who transforms has already received your question." A monk asked, "Today you open the banquet; with what will you instruct us?" The Master said, "Deeply discern the incoming wind." He advanced and asked, "Could it be just this?" The Master said, "Wrong." A monk asked, "The ancient worthies from above transmitted mind with mind. Today we invite the Master; what provision will you set up?" The Master said, "There is a question and there is an answer." He advanced and asked, "If so, then the provision is not in vain." The Master said, "No question, no answer." A monk asked, "Whenever there are words and phrases, all are errors. What is not an error?" The Master said, "A phrase facing the wind—from where does it arise?" He advanced and asked, "Could it be just this, or not?" The Master said, "Do not be mistaken." A monk asked, "What is the dynamic of pecking [from inside] and tapping [from outside]?" The Master said, "An echo." He advanced and asked, "Does it still respond or not?" The Master said, "Just go slowly." A monk asked, "What is the student's own matter?" The Master said, "I keenly receive your question." A monk asked, "What is the single phrase of the separate transmission outside the teachings?" The Master said, "Ask it before the assembly."
