舉：「生法師云：『敲空作響，擊木無聲。』」師以拄杖空中敲云：「阿耶耶。」又敲板頭云：「作聲麼？」僧云：「作聲。」師云：「這俗漢。」又敲板頭云：「喚什麼作聲？」

[The Master] cited: "Dharma Master Sheng said: 'Striking emptiness makes a sound; hitting wood is soundless.'" The Master struck the air with his staff and said, "Ouch, ouch!" He then struck the head of the wooden clapper and said, "Does it make a sound?" The monk said, "It makes a sound." The Master said, "This common fellow!" He then struck the head of the wooden clapper again and said, "What do you call sound?"
