師或時以拄杖打露柱一下云：「三乘十二分教說得著麼？」自云：「說不著。」復云：「咄者野狐精。」僧問：「秖如師意作麼生？」師云：「張公喫酒李公醉。」

The Master once struck an open pillar with his staff and said, "Can the three vehicles and twelve divisions of the teaching speak of this?" He himself said, "They cannot." He said again, "Bah, you wild-fox spirit!" A monk asked, "Just what is the Master's intention?" The Master said, "Mr. Zhang drinks wine, and Mr. Li gets drunk."
