師有時拈拄杖云：「乾坤大地殺活總在這裏。」僧便問：「如何是殺？」師云：「七顛八倒。」僧云：「如何是活？」師云：「要作飯頭。」僧云：「不殺不活時如何？」師便起云：「摩訶般若波羅蜜。」

The Master sometimes held up his staff and said, "Killing and reviving heaven, earth, and the great world are entirely right here." A monk then asked, "What is killing?" The Master said, "Topsy-turvy." The monk said, "What is reviving?" The Master said, "Wanting to be the head cook." The monk said, "How is it when there is neither killing nor reviving?" The Master then arose and said, "Mahāprajñāpāramitā."
