師有時云：「宗門七縱八橫，殺活臨時。」僧便問：「如何是殺？」師云：「冬去春來。」僧云：「冬去春來時如何？」師云：「橫擔拄杖，東西南北一任打野榸。」

The Master sometimes said, "In our school, freely in all directions, killing and reviving accord with the moment." A monk then asked, "What is killing?" The Master said, "Winter departs and spring arrives." The monk said, "How is it when winter departs and spring arrives?" The Master said, "Carrying a staff across the shoulder, freely hitting wild tree-stumps north, south, east, and west."
