舉：「雪峯勘僧：『什麼處去？』僧云：『識得即知去處。』峯云：『爾是了事人，亂走作什麼？』僧云：『莫塗污人好。』峯云：『我即塗污爾，古人吹布毛作麼生？與我說來看。』僧云：『殘羹餿飯已有人喫了也。』」師別前語云：「築著便作屎臭氣。」代後語云：「將謂是鑽天鷂子，元來是死水裏蝦蟇。」

[Yunmen] brought up [the following]: "Xuefeng examined a monk: 'Where are you going?' The monk said, 'If you recognize it, you will know where I am going.' Xuefeng said, 'You are someone who has settled his business; why are you wandering about in confusion?' The monk said, 'Better not to defile people.' Xuefeng said, 'Though I have defiled you, what about the ancient who blew the cloth feather? Speak and let me see.' The monk said, 'Someone has already eaten the leftover soup and spoiled rice.'" For the former remark, the Master provided an alternative: "As soon as you bump into it, it gives off a stench of dung." Answering on behalf of the latter remark, he said, "I took you for a sky-piercing hawk; it turns out you are a toad in stagnant water."
