一日云：「古人面壁閉却門，還透得這裏麼？」代云：「這裏是什麼乾屎橛。」又云：「一。」或云：「般柴來去行住坐臥四威儀中，還出得釋迦老子鼻孔麼？」代云：「和尚也是量才補職。」

One day he said, "The ancient [Bodhidharma] faced the wall and shut the door—did he still penetrate this place?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "What dry shit-spatula is this place?" He also said, "One." Or he said, "Carrying firewood back and forth, within the four deportments of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, does one still get out of Old Śākya's nostrils?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "The Upādhyāya is also filling a post according to talent."
