一日云：「商量舉覺箇什麼？」代云：「鹽貴米賤。」或云：「佛法兩字拈却成得箇什麼？」代云：「死蝦蟇。」或云：「佛法不用學，燈籠露柱欺爾去。作麼生得不欺爾去？」代云：「趙州南，石橋北。」

One day he said, "What are you discussing and bringing up?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "Salt is expensive, rice is cheap." Or he said, "If the two words 'Buddha-Dharma' are taken away, what does that become?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "A dead toad." Or he said, "There is no need to study the Buddha-Dharma; the lanterns and exposed pillars will deceive you. How can you avoid being deceived by them?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "South of Zhaozhou, north of the stone bridge."
