2.259

一日云：「爾師僧繞天下行脚，見老和尚開口，便上來東聽西聽，何不向洗鉢盂處置將一問來。」代云：「也知和尚為物之故，因見火頭公，爾辛苦我賞爾，這箇拄杖子吞却祖師也。」無對，代云：「功不浪施。」又云：「禍不單行。」

One day he said, "You monks go on pilgrimage throughout the world. Seeing an old upādhyāya open his mouth, you immediately come up listening east and listening west. Why do you not bring forth a question from the place where you wash your bowls?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "I also know the upādhyāya acts for the sake of beings: upon seeing the cook monk, [saying,] 'You worked hard, I will reward you; this staff has swallowed the Patriarch.'" There was no response. Answering on their behalf, he said, "Effort is not spent in vain." He also said, "Disasters never come singly."
