師舉：「古人道：『讀經千遍，紙上見經不識。』忽然國師問，爾作麼生？」又云：「忽然國師拈起作麼生？」代前語云：「唵。」代後語云：「朝看《華嚴》，夜讀《般若》。」

The Master cited: "An ancient said: 'Reading the sūtras a thousand times, one sees the sūtras on the paper and does not recognise them.' If suddenly the National Teacher asks, what do you do?" He also said: "If suddenly the National Teacher holds it up, what do you do?" Answering on their behalf to the earlier words, he said: "Oṃ." Answering on their behalf to the later words, he said: "In the morning looking at the Avataṃsaka, at night reading the Prajñā."
